There was a special election today in the 14th Illinois Congressional district, a little ways up the road from my patch of whitebread suburban Hell (TM). It pitted Republican ice cream man Jim Oberweis against Democratic physicist Bill Foster in a race to fill the position vacated by Republican Dennis Hastert. This district has tended Republican for quite some time; Bush took 56% of the vote in 2004, and Hastert had represented them from 1987 until last year. Oberweis ads have been all over the place, he's got name recognition in the area, and Foster has apparently never held elected office before this.

Foster appears to have won, 52% to 48%.

The November election may be excessively interesting.
